Lux literally translated from Latin means “light. So in short, the lux value means the amount of light emitted on a given surface. 1 lux is equivalent to 1 lumen/m2.
There are standards set by the European Union regarding the amount of lux per application. These are defined in the NEN standards. We like to highlight some of the spaces.
Lux value in the office
In the office, the minimum lux value is 500 lux. At other workstations in office spaces, such as the reception area, the lux value may be lower, at 300 lux. In contrast, halls connecting multiple spaces need a minimum lux value of 100 lux.
Lux value in the workshop
In workshops, again, various types of lux values apply, depending on the activities within the space. In metalworking workshops, consider a minimum lux value of 300 lux. On the other hand, a storage facility in the workshop needs a minimum lux value of 100 lux.
Lux value classroom
In a classroom, the minimum lux value is 300 lux. However, in a lecture hall (for evening and adult education, for example), a minimum value of 500 lux is the norm. In a gymnasium, the minimum lux value is 375 lux and in a drawing room it is considerably higher at 800 lux. Read up on the minimum lux value per room in education according to current guidelines.
